What is this about?

Many doctors who have cleared the FMGE exam are struggling to get internship placements in Tamil Nadu. Despite being qualified, they face long delays, unclear processes, and limited seats at government and private medical colleges across the state.

Some have been waiting for months — even years — to start their internship, which is the final step before they can register with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) and begin practicing as doctors.

This survey is being conducted to understand how many doctors in Tamil Nadu are affected and what kind of difficulties they are going through.

How will this be used?
The responses collected may be used to support a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Madras High Court to push for a fair and timely internship allotment process for FMGE-qualified doctors in Tamil Nadu.

How Maharashtra Handles FMG Internship

Maharashtra has a structured, transparent system. Here's how it works — and why we want something similar in Tamil Nadu.

Maharashtra's step-by-step process

1
Online Application — FMG doctors apply online through the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) website with all required documents.
2
Document Verification — Candidates submit documents both online and physically to MMC for verification.
3
Merit List Published — MMC publishes a merit list based on FMGE scores. Separate lists for domicile and non-domicile candidates.
4
Online Preference Filling — Candidates fill preferred hospitals and colleges in order of choice.
5
Merit-Based Allotment — Seats allotted by merit. Tie-breaker: older candidate. Domicile candidates get first priority.
6
Allotment Letter — Candidates download allotment letter and report to assigned college.
Key point: Maharashtra has 46 recognized + 18 approved colleges offering ~2,296 internship seats for FMGs — all through one transparent counselling process.

⚠️ MMC Circular on Illegal Fees

On 8th August 2022, the Maharashtra Medical Council issued a circular addressing medical colleges charging illegal fees from FMG doctors for CRMI (internship) postings.

Outline of the circular
Per NMC's CRMI Regulations 2021, no college can charge any fee from FMG doctors for internship.
Private colleges were demanding ₹1 lakh to ₹2+ lakhs illegally.
MMC warned all medical colleges against collecting any illegal charges.
FMG interns must receive a stipend equal to domestic MBBS interns.
Violations are a breach of NMC rules and colleges face action.

Why does this matter for Tamil Nadu?

Unlike Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu currently has no structured, transparent online counselling system for FMG internship allotment. No clear merit list, no preference filling, and no proper timeline.

If Maharashtra can run a fair, merit-based process — Tamil Nadu should be able to do the same.
